Every year as Halloween rolls around it’s a challenge to choose an incredibly awesome costume to depict the horrors that this holiday is synonymous with. Even television movies have been influenced by the dark-side of this holiday; movies fitting in name and nature. Scary seem to be inherently all that Halloween is portrayed to be.
Halloween which is also referred to as ‘All Hallows Eve’ came into being eons ago as the Celtics marked the beginning of winter with animal sacrifices, offerings to the dead and bonfires to commemorate the passing of love ones. What a strange thing to celebrate indeed; death and dismay!
Rooted in pagan ideology, this festival was introduced to the western world and took on a life of its own. No longer to be the commemoration of the beginning of winter or as a remembrance to the dead but just a reason to get dressed up and make merry. Who can blame them though, as all death has to offer is depressing. Dead things, dead people and skeletons have been catapulted to the forefront as the costumes of choice for the horror lovers. The shadowy side of this holiday always held major appeal for the imaginative persons who choose to enjoy it.
However as superheroes began to be depicted in movies as powerful beings who came to save the world from the dark forces, these costumes were embraced by impressionable toddlers and teens who relish the ideology of the superhero. So as you might have guessed the Superhero costumes has topped the list as the must have costume for 2013. From the hammer swinging Thor, the mask crusader Batman, the fully equipped flying suit of Iron Man and the sexy man of steel Superman, Power Rangers and even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; it seems like the good guys are finishing first this year for a change. Micky Mouse is still a favourite for baby girls while the boys can be outfitted as cutesy little lions complete with adorable manes. For the ladies who still want to ooze sex appeal the cat-woman costume, the generic cat, the queen or the sexy ninja are still at the top of the list. Those who have a thing for the undead, the witch costume complete with broom is still at the top of the list along with Freddy Krueger, Jason Vorhees and zombies.
Whatever reason you choose to justify your participation in this holiday, make sure you do it safely.
